At Talbot Park Baptist Church, we believe that becoming like Christ is a life-long process. To that end, we seek to teach and equip believers at all stages of their faith journey. Every Sunday morning at 9:30, we offer Sunday School classes which provide a time of small group fellowship, prayer, and Bible study. More than just a dry academic exercise, these classes help connect our faith to our everyday lives as we struggle with real world issues. Questions are not just tolerated; they are welcomed. Our goal is to nurture disciples who are growing both intellectually and spiritually. Currently, we have three Sunday School class options for adults: The Calvary Class, which uses Smith & Helwys curriculum; The Compass Class, which rotates between biblical and topical studies; and The Bible Class, which focuses on more in-depth Bible study.
In addition to Sunday School, we have numerous other studies and classes. Over the course of the year, we have several Bible studies on Wednesday nights, as well as movie nights where we discuss faith and popular films. A group from Talbot Park meets weekly to discuss books with members from the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. Books we have read include: Prayer by Philip Yancey, Short Stories by Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine, Why Jesus? by Will Willimon, Losing Moses on the Freeway by Chris Hedges, and The Way of the Heart by Henri Nouwen.
During the summer, we participate with Norfolk area churches, synagogues, and mosques in a two-week "Interfaith Academy" that promotes interfaith dialogue and learning about our respective traditions. We believe that the more we learn about each other, the more we will be able to learn about ourselves.
